The Chicago Suburb of Harvey is a Disaster
Harvey today is a city that's full of blight, vacant lots and abandonment. It's has had a rough go of it over the years to put it nicely. The city saw a peak population of 35,000 back in 1980 but today that number is down below 20,000. It's hard to see this community being able to turn it around anytime soon... or... possibly... ever.

Declining, Yet Still Smiling | Calumet City, Illinois
Просмотров 12 тыс.19 часов назад
Calumet City, Illinois is known for its smiley face water towers more than anything else these days. In the past, the suburban city was often referred to as "Sin City" due to not only drinking during the prohibition era, but also gambling and other forms of adult entertainment. The district that Sin City once stood proudly has since been demolished, and today it's nothing more than a couple of ...

SUBURBAN CHICAGO: Ugly, Decaying and Dying | Riverdale, IL
Просмотров 47 тыс.28 дней назад
Not to be confused with the Chicago suburb of the same name, the Village of Riverdale is about 20 miles south of the Chicago Loop and about 5 miles west of the Indiana State Line. It's within the larger Calumet Region which historically has relied on the manufacturing industry as a staple for it's economy. Over the years, Riverdale and the surrounding communities have seen sharp declines. River...
THE WORST MAYOR In the Country Has RUINED This Chicago Suburb

New Orleans is a special city. The culture in the Big Easy is more unique than what you'll find in most other large cities throughout the U.S. Whether it's Mardi Gras, the Creole or Cajun cuisine, the music scene or the architecture that's found in the French Quarter, most visitors are able to have a good time when they visit New Orleans. On the flip side, there's a lot of things to not love ab...
Poverty in the Everglades | Belle Glade, Florida

Belle Glade is a poverty stricken city in south central Florida. Crime has been a problem here for a long time too. It's kind of ironic how Belle Glade is in Palm Beach County. If you were to head a few dozen miles east and stay within the same county, you would see a completely opposite economy. Agriculture is the towns main industry, in which sugar is the main product of the area. Help me gro...
DYING, Decaying, Dangerous, Declining Italian Mob Town | Chicago Heights, Illinois

Chicago Heights is about 26 miles south of the Chicago Loop. The town was built through blue-collar industries. Jobs were once plenty here through steel mills, chemical factories and other types of manufacturers. When Chicago Heights was first growing, the city saw a substantial amount of Italian immigrants. Overtime, the Chicago Outfit (an Italian gang) which was lead by Al Capone set up a bra...

Southfield is a fairly large suburb. In the 70’s it became Detroit's suburban office mecca if you will. Another notable area within Southfield is the Northland Center, which was... kind of... the fi...

Ford Heights is kind of dreary, kind of depressing, hopeless, the blight seems endless, and at times, the village leadership over the years has been a circus....

The Left Armpit of Indiana: Terre Haute

Is it fair to call Terre Haute the Left armpit of Indiana? Or should a different city be given this title instead? The criteria behind the crazy idea of calling a city the armpit of a state or a region can be quite subjective. Born at Ingalls hospital. Raised all over. Behind where Walmart was, it was called Washington Park plaza. There used to be a horse race track, Washington Park, behind the plaza. It Burned. If I remember the first store there was Kmart or venture I can't remember which first. Across the street, was Washington Park Mall. Diana theaters. Service Merchandise. Washington Park restaurant. Later Pop n Fresh then Pizza Hut. Popular for people to Go there from Harvey. Remember the first Wendy's just south of I-80? Sneaking into the Sheraton hotel to swim? Good old days bike everywhere

Brilliant narrative evaluation tied in with excellent video and awesome (and heartbreaking) drone footage. This is much much more than evaluation of a community that has seen better days. Instead this is a carefully researched and assembled demonstration of what can and does work or not work essentially anywhere! This is not about talking points instead it is or should be a wake up call for everyone. There is so much wisdom here like the importance of good government, schools, public safety, planning etc. Being an old timer I am amazed how well he recaps the history that I remember going through. Chris should be given an honorary PHD in humanities, urban planning or history for his hard and heartfelt illuminating work.

The problem is the multi billion dollar real estate firm that bought up 30% of the rentals in your city then jacked up the rent 67% in 3 years as greedflation reduced how much a paycheck can afford. Sure, drugs are a problem. But when you have nothing, they are the only answer you can afford. Drug prices did not go up 67%, rent did. Everyone in this chat are ignoring the real problem and complaining about the victims. Stop blaming the victims! Blame the cause.
